Saw STS124 take off! 5 months ago

Wow, it actually happened. Got into Orlando around 2, got the rental despite a few delays, but made it out to a viewing area along the coast in Titusville. Saw the Shuttle take off after all these years. It is just hard to wrap my head around the concept of seeing a giant machine blast off and go into orbit within fifteen minutes or so. Just awe inspiring. We were too far away to “feel” it, but definitely heard the sound after about 30 seconds. It is so bright ... that is one thing the TV doesn’t begin do justice to. So glad I got a chance to see this.

many congrats on making this goal! since the clock is ticking on the shuttle program, i’ve been thinking more about going to a launch, but one thing that makes me hesitant is the possibility that i’ll plan a vacation there just for NASA to delay a mission beyond the length of my vacation! i’m guessing, tho, that it’s a chance i’d have to take. anyhoo, i’m very happy for you and i hope you were able to take some nice pix.

I know what you mean. FWIW, there are lots of cool things to see & do there even if the shuttle launch is postponed.

Actually vacation was the main focus of the trip—it was coincidence that the shuttle was launching at that time. We spent a lot of time in St. Augustine and also fit in a visit to Epcot which I’d also been wanting to do for ages.

Can also head west to Tampa and hang in Clearwater on the beach and in Tampa and visit Ybor City, etc.
