Publish a novel (read all 2 entries…)
Publish A Novel. 1 year ago

Hello :)
I’m 13-years-old and have always dreamed of publishing a novel.
I want to study English Literature at Uni and I have always loved writing. In year 3 I won a Best In State 24-carat gold medal for a comprehension test. And I also won a poetry competition in Year 2.Also, Ive taken writing courses, entered my work in Anthology stuff etc. Anyway, sorry lol I’m not here to gloat.

I also would love to publish a novel between now and when I’m 17. I don’t know why, but it would just be…better(?) If I published a novel at a young age. Now, if you want something, you can’t just sit back and let it happen, but I havent. I’m working on a story now, and when I type it up (Ive been writing it freehand) Ill post it :) It’s called Holly Would.

I Have Some Questions:
-Would I be able to publish at a young age?
-If so, What are some good publishers in Australia (for when I finish the book) I know Random House, Sid Harta, Vanity Press, Scholastic etc. etc.
-Whats an Anthology? Like a magazine? I entered one but I dno what it is :P
-Do any of you have suggestions or advice?

Thankyou.

I have some answers.

-Would I be able to publish at a young age?
Do yourself a favor and look up Amelia Atwater Rhodes. She’s not just a gimmicky young author, but genuinely good. She had her first publishing contract at fourteen.

As for some publishers in Australia, I’m afraid you’ll have to hunker down to the book store and liberate yourself a copy of the Writer’s Market. It’s an invaluable resource that outlines the market fairly clearly for you.

As to an anthology, it is a collection of short stories published in a book format. They’re a great publishing credit, if you can get into a legitimate one.

As to advice or suggestions, keep writing, and keep reading! You’re a cut above the rest just by being able to write proper sentences, and not use chat speak!

Good luck!

Thankyou

Thankyou for your comment! I haven’t been on in a while, but guess what? i got published in an anthology xDD Its called, ‘One Degree From Common Words’ – The story I wrote, now when I look at it, is extremely lacking suitable vocabulary. For instance, it’s all, “she walked to the door.” as now, I would probably say, “Holly traipsed despondantly to the mahogany-wooden door that had been left ajar hitherto. The icy breeze was unbearable – three months of winter was hardly morale-boosting.”
- I wrote that off the top of my head, please excuse cheesball-ness. But, thanks for the advice, and thanks for commenting!

young writing

I had my first book published when I was 17. It was an authorised translation from French of a music biography. I also wrote for computer magazines then. So it is possible to get books published when you’re young, although it’s probably much harder in fiction than it is in non-fiction.

The main thing is to enjoy what you write and do it for yourself. I think young people are encouraged to seek approval for everything they do externally (through exams, fashion etc). If you write something you like, it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t get published. It could be a valuable step on the way to being published later. Many adults are content to write for the fun of writing without any plans to have it published, and they might be the happiest writers of all.
