That’s like asking how long should a book be :) Keep in mind that chapters are how you structure and pace the overall plot of your story. In my opinion, you can’t have chapters until you have a complete outline. Though the length of a given chapter is irrelevant,(there are some classics composed of one single chapter!)chapters tend to be in proportional chunks in terms of length (if one chapter is 50 pages, then they all may be of a similar length-but not always.)
You’re asking a tricky question. Some writers create chapters that are only a few pages long, while others write five chapters that encompass an entire novel.
There are two things to keep in mind—writing a novel is an organic process where you will discover new things as you write the first draft. Secondly, writing is a mechanical process, and you need to create framing techniques (such as chaptering) to help your reader progress from one idea to the next.
If I were to give you a definitive answer, the chapter needs to cover a specific idea or section of time, and the next chapter should do the same. Hope this is helpful.
I’ve written many books and have gotten them illustrated but not published.
Anyway, for the length of the chapter, I’d have to know the length of the book. What I do is in the 1st draft, I take how ever many pages there are (it will vary by drafts, but that’s okay), and divide that by how many chapters you want. (However, I wouldn’t write a 500 page book and divide it by 10. :-)
You have to be reasonable…)
Good luck with your book!
