I was hugely pregnant and uncomfortable at the time, but I figured the single most important thing I could do to support civil rights for all people would be to show up at the one wedding I was invited to! The ceremony was surprisingly beautiful – I expected very dry city-hall perfunctory stuff. The volunteer jp’s worked so hard to get as many people married as possible in the unforeseeable immediate future before the courts shut them down. They were troopers. My friends had been together for over 20 years and had two sons together. It was very emotional for them to be recognized officially as a family in the city they had lived for most of those 20 years together.
I was very very proud to be a San Franciscan right then.
