Well, I've done it - three times - here's how to and how not to 2 years ago

How to? Get yourself noticed. Look for competitions, network – get an established author interested in your stuff, keep writing and redouble your efforts whenever you submit anything (so you have something going JUST IN CASE your story gets rejected) and finally NEVER GIVE UP
How not to? That’s easy. Lose your focus. Get distracted. Make excuses for yourself (“I’ll watch TV tonight an write twice as much tomorrow” – balls you will!)
