If “Time is money” and “Money doesn’t grow on trees”, then perhaps we can conclude that “Time doesn’t grow on trees” either. And if that’s the case, then time is indeed something to be cherished and respected.
Samuel Wang has written 6 entries about this goal
“This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel,
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.”
Excerpt from The Hobbit (J. R. R. Tolkien, 1892-1973)
“L’exactitude est la politesse des rois. (Punctuality is the politeness of kings.)”—Louis XVIII of France (1755-1824)
“Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so.”—Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Nevertheless, it’s probably still worth being on time… if nothing else, just to avoid getting yelled at.
My watch battery wasn’t getting any younger so I finally decided to replace it with a new one. I’m not sure whether that will improve the timepiece’s accuracy, but at least I won’t have to worry about time suddenly stopping.
My wristwatch seems to lose about 1-2 seconds per day, which could disrupt my temporal awareness by upwards of 6-12 minutes a year if I don’t occasionally recalibrate.
