A veritable feast...I hope! 1 year ago

The number of vegetables I’m growing at the moment keeps increasing, in part due to kind donations from fathers of co-workers (actually only one :-)), but also because of spur of the moment purchases on my part.

Although the plan was to grow only in pots, I really should have researched a bit more carefully – I recently read that only the foolhardy try to grow brussel sprouts in containers – oops! Today I repotted them into the biggest pots I could afford, but I think the new garden may need to include some raised beds to allow them to really flourish. My leeks could also prove problematic, as they need deep soil, but fingers crossed they survive in an old potato barrel.

Other recent additions to my collection include pak choi and rocket – both sets of seeds planted today. Hopefully I’ve planted the right amount this time – last week I had to thin my lettuces, which I found somewhat depressing, a sort of snuffing out of life that had barely begun.

I probably have enough vegetables for the first year now, but I might pick up a couple of tomato plants – apparently these are what I should have started with, so even if all my other plants die fingers crossed I can harvest some tomatoes. Would really like the kind you have in a hanging basket, if I can find one. And maybe some more herbs…and a courgette plant…and…oh dear :-)

Little sprouts! 1 year ago

I’ve planted some brussel sprouts in the garden, and also have plans to grow some mint, tomatoes and salad leaves this summer. At the moment I have limited space as we’re waiting on fixing the roof before we replant the garden, but even without this I feel I’m making progress with this goal. I’ve decided that the vital thing is to have lots of plants so watering them seems worth the effort – hopefully my commitment is strong enough for them to make it through the summer!

Allotments? 2 years ago

One of my friends who doesn’t have a garden just looked into hiring an allotment, and discovered that they only cost around £27 per year, even in London. I never really thought of having an allotment before, but this might make more sense than digging up our little garden.

Think I will start off growing in pots first though, before making such a big commitment

Saves money and tastes better. 3 years ago

I was much inspired by HaroldChasen’s tomatoes at the weekend, and have decided to bookmark this goal so that I don’t miss the growing season next year. I guess I should really find out when the best time to start planting is.
