I’m proud of this because I needed to prove to myself that I could grow things from seeds – nurture and feed them and see them flourish. Looking back, it was as much to demonstrate my creative potential as actually eating them or trying to save the planet. I’ve learnt a lot for next year – when to plant, how to plant, and not to put too many seeds in each pot and overwater them so they mildew :-|

I pulled up a couple of them today and there are quite a few of the little beauties in the pot. I reckon another month and I’ll be able to harvest them. There should just be enough for one meal for three of us :-) The salad leaves are stable, in fact they probably won’t last much longer!
I pulled out a couple of plants to thin out the pots ready for the “summer crop” :-) and at the bottom of each were oval, pale orange nodules. Carrots!
After the death of the squashes, I wondered if it would just be salad leaves this year. But no.
And the carrots seem to be coming on well now I’ve thinned them out. I wonder when they start becoming orange and real? Probably July or so, that would be four months after planting. The squash are for the long haul.
The salad leaves are strong-tasting, deliciously tangy.
The carrots keep on coming, and my partner has planted some more things in the germinator on the kitchen windowsill – chillis, tomatoes and basil I think.
Roll on summer!
:-( But the salad leaves are coming on nicely. I can’t believe the carrots are ever going to have anything solid and orange beneath those slender green shoots – if I pull one up there’s nothing there but white roots.
The squashes didn’t even get out of the starting gate.
Frost-bitten – I don’t think their going to make it. That one on the left went in more recently, so we might get 3 or 4 beans max :-)
The carrots, borlotti beans and salad leaves are out, only the squashes left on the windowsill. I need to start watching the weather forecast so I can pull the pots in if a frost comes late on. Get my green fingers! Reminds me of my Grandad.
