catch a salmon in Lake Washington
For the first time in 2 years... 2 years ago

... the lake will be open for sockeye salmon fishing. Unfortunately, it’s going to be allowed on only 3 days, and I will be out of town. Oh well. Maybe next year. For more info, see Seattle Times article.

Change of plans 2 years ago

I think we’re going to build a treehouse instead.

ride in the Trek Tri-Island
Signed up and starting to train 2 years ago

I rode 25 miles today! I need to come up with a schedule that will allow me to do more long rides. I’m also trying to convince 2 friends to join me for the Trek.

It’s a 3-day 150-mile ride starting in Seattle and ending in Victoria, BC. For more info, see the American Lung Association of Washington site.

see an owl in Seattle
Searching for Seattle owls 2 years ago

I went on a owl walk in Seward Park last night, but we didn’t see or hear any of the barred owls that are supposed to live there. We saw a heron, an eagle’s nest and a couple bats, but I still want to see an owl.

become a better skier
Took my first-ever ski class 2 years ago

I’ve been skiing for a long time, but I only go once or twice a year, so I never seem to get any better. I can get down any intermediate run, but I’m always apprehensive. I finally took a ski class during a recent trip to Whistler, and it was amazing what a difference it made. The instructor told me 2 things to think about (essentially, fixing my stance), and I was zipping down the slopes with a lot more confidence. Here’s hoping I still remember what he told me next winter, which is probably the next time I’ll ski!

Waiting... 2 years ago

Finally got on the waiting list at my bank, but it could be 2 years!

get new kitchen chairs
Finally... 3 years ago

I’ve been wanting to buy new kitchen chairs for 2 years, but couldn’t find affordable ones to go with an unusual antique table. I finally bought some. The unfortunate part is that they need to be assembled. So I guess I’ll add “assemble new chairs” to my list, and hope that won’t take 2 more years!

replenish emergency supplies
A start 3 years ago

I bought a 3-day disaster supply kit from the local Red Cross. It’s all in one backpack, which I can keep by the door. I still have to put emergency supplies in the car, but I feel a whole lot more prepared now.

narrate an audio book
Moving in the right direction 3 years ago

I am on the schedule to record a demo for a small audio book company the week after next. Wish me luck! In the meantime, I’ve been hired to help with production.

Pilot a boat through the Chittenden Locks (Seattle) (read all 2 entries…)
Very cool... 3 years ago

and pretty easy, as long as you have long enough lines and listen to the lock operators. We got to go through the small lock on the way out and the big lock on the way back. The wait times weren’t very long, although that might be a different story late in the day on a Sunday (we came back late morning). Sort of a funny scene, with tourists taking pictures of us taking pictures while going through the locks.

Finally -- I'm not craving a Pepsi! 3 years ago

I still like sweet drinks, and I know I’ll drink a Pepsi every once in a while, but it’s not a daily habit any more.

This weekend... 3 years ago

... will be our first time through the Ballard Locks. We’re bringing a friend who has gone through before, so I’m hoping the lock operators won’t need to yell at us too much!

go Christmas caroling by kayak
A Very Seattle Christmas 3 years ago

Several years ago, when I first moved to Seattle, I heard about Christmas caroling by kayak. A group paddles around to the houseboats on Lake Union and sings for the residents, no matter what the weather (which, as you can imagine, is usually rain). In the past, I never remembered to call about it in time. But this year (thanks to 43 Things), I thought of it way in advance, so I’m all signed up to go!

learn to ride a bike with clipless pedals (read all 6 entries…)
Clipless and Fearless! 3 years ago

Just got back from a ride along my normal route, and thanks to my new SPD pedals, I rode faster than ever! Other than a few moments involving a sudden maneuver by a garbage truck, I wasn’t nervous at all. I clipped out when approaching stop signs, just to practice.

I think the key to success is adjusting the clips to a loose setting when you first try them. The guys at Montlake Bicycle Shop adjusted mine perfectly!

Practiced clipping in and out... 3 years ago

on a trail with lots of grass on either side. I’ll mark this done after I do a long ride. As long as it’s sunny, I’ll try tomorrow.

Now I just need to get up the nerve to try them out.

go out on "date nights" with my spouse on a regular basis (read all 2 entries…)
It had been so long... 3 years ago

...since we had gone out together regularly that it took us a while to figure what to do other than eat out. Now we’re on a roll. Last week we spent an evening kayaking, then grabbed some pizza. We bought tickets to a concert for our next date. We’re loving the every other week schedule, so we’re going to try to keep it up even after our sitter goes back to school in the fall.

eat more vegetables (read all 2 entries…)
Summertime bounty 3 years ago

It’s easy to eat more veggies (and fruit) in the summer, but I have a feeling I’ll end up putting this back on the list later in the year.
