How I did it: I didn't know until the week before that I'd be able to go for sure. I had bought the plane ticket to Reno two weeks before, knowing that I might get a ship assignment and not be able to go. Sure enough, I was able to fly up and meet my folks and my aunts, uncles, and cousins for the yearly family camping trip to Fallen Leaf Lake. I was finally able to join my family at the yearly camping trip to Fallen Leaf Lake in Tahoe in August. It was only a few short days, but it was great to smell the pine trees, sit by the fire and get all smokey-smelling while talking and laughing with the whole family, go mountain biking with my cousins, fishing with my dad, and swimming (well, wading, because I had just had Lasik so I couldn’t get water in my eyes).
I heard they automatically cut anyone from the auditions who couldn’t do 20 pull-ups. Sounds like a new goal!
