when i was younger i started writing a book…. by hand… you know, the old fashioned way. at one point i thought it might be time to actually publish it. now being a child of the zine age, i wasnt going to shop my crappy writing around when a xerox machine was within my grasp. so i set about typing the whole thing up.
i would spend hours upon hours at dennys with a typewriter painstakingly copying my handwriting to something i could photocopy. hours turned into days turned into weeks. finally, after 3 ribbons and 183 pots of coffee…. it was finished. i was so excited, i didnt even goto bed, i headed straight to kinkos and got right to work on phase 3.
a few hours later, a few hundred copies of my first book were finished…. hot off the xerox. i sold most copies to friends and random strangers i would encounter at dennys.
since then, i’ve written and published 5 books, a photo journal and am working on getting book number 6 released while i work on two novels and a collection of short stories all at the same time. the computer age has definitely made the task of writing and typing it all up much easier than it was 15 years ago. now i write everything on a laptop, and there is no reducing things on a xerox so they fit onto half a page anymore. everything gets done on the fly.
have i made any money? some… but really not more than what was needed to cover my printing costs and a few treats… like coffee while im writing. the point of publishing things yourself isnt to make a fortune and retire to a career where you can sit at home all the time…. its just to get your stuff out there… so you can share it with everyone who might be interested. its a reason to stop making excuses as to why your book hasnt been published yet too.
