Just read this: http://www.brazencareerist.com/2008/12/28/growing-pains-time-to-dress-like-an-adult-now. This line stung: I stare at my Happy bunny t-shirts, torn up blue jeans, and knee high black boots and sigh. Fare thee well, old friends, but it’s time for me to move on and grow up a little. ...I don’t want to be one of those older girls who try too desperately to look like they’re in their teens.
Yes, my wardrobe is full of t-shirts (ThinkGeek rather than Happy Bunny), distressed jeans (I did the torn ones the first time around – something this author’s too young to remember), and knee-high black boots. Also sneakers. My Skechers look more like something a 4-year-old would wear. And this child who’s dissing my clothes is 12 years younger than I am.
As I read her post, I wondered. Is it time to hang up the miniskirts, the tall boots, the tight jeans? Do I look…pathetic?
But she’s speaking in a business context. I dress differently for work. And I realized that I’m old enough to stop worrying about how people perceive the way I dress – that’s for teenagers, and I’m old enough to have given birth to most of them. The only person I have to please is myself.
And by god, if I want to dress this way 50 years from now, I will.
In the past few weekends I’ve purchased: a fancy black dress, a black zip-up hoodie and a vegan motorcycle jacket!
I’m still in need of a winter coat – but that is currently a Christmas list item.
So I’m marking this as completed!
Whoa there, so after reading my last entry in this goal I discovered I need to proofread before I submit! Holy smokes!
When I went to Oswego last weekend I hit up the local Target store – hahaha – with my brother. It was a good time.
I ended up buying things that totally aren’t on the prior list, but it’s okay because it might be time to make a new list. ;P
I bought: a tiny tank top (to layer or to use for pjs perhaps), a black long sleeved top (I need sleeves! Chicago is freeeeeezing!), and 2 pairs of underwear.
I also balanced my checkbook when I went back to the city, NOT a friendly situation. So I think some items that I wanted (like the sweater from urban outfitters) will have to be ignored. There are some things that I would really like to have and have need for – like a warmer coat. I want one of those British style pea coats. I think I’ll put that on my Christmas list. I’m also gonna put a pair of creepers on my list. :}
I think I still will buy a black zip up sweater. They have a saweet one at H&M. It’s designed after the look of motorcycle jackets. And speaking of which I’d really love to find a vegan moto jacket. I had a leather one, but I sold it on ebay because I couldn’t bear to wear a leather jacket anymore. :/
And that’s whats going on in my head right now. I know, pretttty lame huh? ;}
so I’ve made some progress. I sorted through all my clothes. I have a lot! I tried on things I thought were no good. And basically most of the stuff I have is still good. But I think I do need a few key items.
- a black zip up sweater. Mine got mauled by my rabbit and the zipper is busted, and its covered in holes. I still wear it, because I’m just that fashionalble.
- a new nicely fitting pair of jeans. I’m good with the jeans, but most of them I think fit me funky.
- That saweet sweater I saw at urban outfitters. It’s like 60 bucks. But I’m considering…. :D
- new underwear.
- a new package of socks.
and then I think I could be pretty happy. :]

and bought me some clothes on our shopping trip Friday. I still need to weed some old stuff out; I did a little when I washed up my fall clothes, but have yet to implement the “one in, one out” on these or the last batch of new clothes.
- white button-up dress shirt (to replace my old white button-up dress shirt, which no longer buttons over my chest since I passed the 100-lb mark)
- blue slinky dress top (the blue is just gorgeous)
- black and gray striped sweater (it makes me look stacked…had to have it)
- football jersey-style T (adorable…and it was on clearance)
- long-sleeved knit top in blues and purples
- khaki miniskirt (R likes me in minis)
I also failed to report a few new purchases over the past few weeks:
- denim miniskirt (to replace the two stonewashed ones I gave to Goodwill)
- two new knit tops (one of which will replace the black top I should have tossed three years ago)
- purple sweater (I need sweaters)
- pencil skirt (it fit)
To sum up:
- Other than maybe picking up a pair or two of 34” inseam jeans to wear with heels, I’m set for jeans.
- I’m good on skirts.
- Ditto men’s hoodie sweatshirts (I’ve got 6 now) and cute t-shirts with stuff printed on them.
- I don’t have much in the way of dress clothes for freezing-cold weather, but otherwise I think I’m doing ok. And I am learning how to knit…
- I could stand a few more workout outfits, but as it’s getting cooler, I can probably squeak by on what I have til spring.
- Also don’t have much in the way of date outfits, but then we’re too broke to go out anyway.
Now, mostly what I need is shoes. Pretty much everything except for workout shoes and black boots…I have those. Need black, brown, and navy dress shoes for fall (not sandals), tall brown boots, maybe short brown boots, and a pair of tan boots would be nice.
I’ll settle for a pair of black dress shoes…that’s what I wear the most of. And mine look like they’ve tangled with a pit bull.

despite the difficulties:
- I hate most of the fashions right now. They look hideous on me, they’re not practical for work or home, and/or the washing instructions are more trouble than they’re worth.
- My office has instituted casual dress until November due to the construction, so buying dress clothes right now would make no sense as it will be too cold to wear them once the casual dress code is lifted.
- I’m broke, and what’s on sale isn’t what I’m looking for (per the two reasons listed above).
Despite all this, I managed to buy…
- Two pairs of jeans; the 3s I bought a few weeks ago tend to fall off, so I bought 1s…mind you, I can’t get most 1s over my knees. Sizes are starting to vary wildly by brand, I see.
- A man’s button-up shirt ($9.98!) to wear with my skinny jeans. You can take the girl out of the 80s…
- A pair of shorts with “74” on them – finally, a trendy “oldies” year article of clothing with a relevant year on it!
- A black knit skirt with a high waist and full skirt. God, it takes me back.
- A cami and cardigan.
- Three knit shirts that will take me into fall, and work equally well for work or home.
Now, to weed out my existing clothes…the “one in, one out” rule still stands.

One gray 3/4 sleeve t-shirt – not necessarily replacing anything, but it was only $4.
Three new pairs of jeans – again, not necessarily replacing anything, but rounding out my jeans collection so I can stop wearing the ratty old ones. The ratty old ones are now my painting/staining/cleaning jeans.

As I’ve told Mom, some days I have it and some days I don’t. Usually, I don’t. So when I do, I don’t feel all that guilty about spending the money. Today’s haul:
- two pairs of exercise shorts
- brown sandals
- brown dress shoes
- black sandals
- black skirt
- black slacks
- black hoodie (mine is so old, it’s more gray than black)
- khakis
- denim shorts (!)
I have thus added to the Goodwill bag:
- black and brown sandals that hurt my feet
- two pairs of exercise shorts and matching camis that I can no longer fit into
- black slacks that never did fit quite right
All in all, a very good clothes and shoes day.

I’m considering buying shorts. I haven’t worn them, with one exception (road trip through the Southwest in July, in a car with no A/C) since I was 19 years old and a drunk guy made a rude comment about my legs…or, as he said, the lack thereof. Nobody understands why I let that affect me so, least of all me (since when do I let random people in gas stations dictate what I do?), but it’s stuck with me.
Well, I’m older now. Heavier. Have a bit more “f-you” to me. And I think I should own at least one pair of shorts. I’ll see what today’s shopping excursion turns up.
