I’ve actually done this multiple times before when I was living in the Bay Area (aka Road Bike Heaven), but I haven’t been riding regularly at all lately. I need to get off my butt and map out a good long ride and then just do it.

i rode 85 miles one day on my mountain bike, from portsmouth to hastings, it wasgreeat even tho the last 25 miles were just ain rain rain. i enjoyed it.
got the train back. ;)
The best way to do this (IMHO) is to get an odometer for your bike & find some back roads near where you live. It’s great to bike 50 miles, or a century (100 miles) in the Spring or Fall, as they are beautiful transition times. But 50 miles is nice, anyhow, if you can find some back roads or country roads, get away from a city, and enjoi nature. Nature on a bike is, IMHO, just about the right speed, with the exception of actually being on foot in the woods.
I rode the Tour de Cure in May 2005. 25-miles and it was great. I’d love to know what 50 miles feels like. I also would like to find a worthy cause to motivate me towards reaching this goal.
