This is so sad...  — 1 week ago

I just had to throw away my cereal after finding out it has glucose-fructose syrup, a.k.a. HFCS!! I should have thought to check… will have to bear it in mind all the time from now on! Does anyone have any info about UK foods and HFCS?

Ocean Spray CranApple Juice  — 3 weeks ago

Oh, the vice that is this heavenly drink…

I grew up on Ocean Spray CranApple juice. It’s a staple in my fridge. And of course, it’s just gotta have HFCS in it. GRRRR!!!

So, I’m finishing off the gallons I’ve amassed in my pantry (no sense in wasting)....and will keep the bottles. And fill them with a mixture of 100% cranberry juice and 100% apple juice.

The cost will be marginally higher—100% apple juice is easy to come by, but the cranberry juice will hurt the wallet a bit, especially if I go for organic.

But the cost to the wallet vs. the cost to my body…I’m good with that.

it's in EVERYTHING  — 3 weeks ago

Shockingly Whole Foods Market still has things on the shelf that contain high fructose corn syrup… in the form of HEINZ ketchup, which happens to be my favorite. I’m trying slowly but surely to eliminate HFCS from my diet. I’ll be searching for a list of foods that are HFCS free soon and share it with you. I do have some confusion over all of the corn products that end up in conventionally processed foods that most of us eat on a daily basis, such as yogurts. Who’s brilliant idea was it to put this poison in what should be a healthy food? So is plain ole corn syrup just as bad for us as high fructose corn syrup? Maybe not, but with all of the additives in foods it gets too confusing, so I am going to search for foods with ingredients that I can pronounce and try to keep the number of ingredients under 10.

By the way, for those of you who eat energy bars, check out LARABAR produced by HUMM foods… yummy! They are a fruit & nut bar made with real food, usually raw, non GMO, vegan, kosher, no sugar added, gluten free, soy free and dairy free. They are becoming my preferred snack even though they pack a lot of fat (from the nuts).

I’m also interested in eating foods that have a low glycemic index… but I LOVE ice cream… so this is difficult for me. My favorite being Haagen Dazs deep chocolate peanutbutter! Do I have to make another list for that? LOL!

This is my first entry here, I hope I can find my way back. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Wow....  — 2 months ago

In preparation for making this my next primary dietary goal, I’ve started taking note of what foods I currently eat that have high fructose corn syrup.

Mind you, I already eat only non-hydrogenated foods. So I figure my odds aren’t bad that most don’t have HFCS either.

WRONG. I’m really in for another HUGE revamping of my pantry and fridge. Makes the goal seem daunting, but if I can go completely non-hydrogenated, I can do this, too!

I’ve already eliminated all (fully and partially) hydrogenated oils from my diet. High fructose corn syrup is my next target!

I have been lazy about adopting this goal, but I am going to be strict for a month. No coke, pepsi, amp, red bull, or gatorade – NO SODA – for a solid month. I’ve started a teeth-whitening kit, and don’t want to undo all that with pop. Plus my skin and gut are looking terrible. If I can avoid sugar, those will improve. I think I’d look better if I could just quit sabotaging myself with these junk-food drinks.

Update on 6/28:
Unfortunately I couldn’t stick to this for the month. My commitment is simply not strong enough to this goal right now.

Eliminating HFCS  — 3 months ago

I too am doing this and feel so much better. I’m maintaining a list of HFCS free foods at http://www.stophfcs.com/list also you can list foods at http://stophfcs.aforumfree.com/index.htm and I will use those posts to keep the other list updated.

I appreciate any help with this! HFCS is nasty, and I’m glad so many folks are refusing to buy products that have this as an ingredient.

TIA!

Yikes!  — 3 months ago

Okay, I want to give it up for good…stuff’s horrible. But here’s the thing…I love coffee creamer….how can I give that up…I mean what is an alternative(s)? Any solutions? Also, anyone heard anything about turbinado sugar and its benefits/precautions?

I have found out after much research how awful this is and how it’s hidden in almost all processed foods. It causes IBD in many people, weight gain, etc. and now I want to avoid it and get healthier. I wonder if they’re using Genetically modified corn to produce this, which is even more scary. Back to basics and natural, organic, locally grown ingredients would improve everyone’s health significantly.

I only just found out  — 3 months ago

... how evil this stuff is. And it’s in EVERYTHING! It’s damn near impossible to avoid.

Why are they putting this stuff in our food supply? Is it to gradually make everyone sick so that they can ‘cure’ us with yet more man-made chemicals?
