I still haven’t been able to save money to go on any trips to see penguins in their natural habitat, but I did get to go to the Georgia Aquarium on my birthday to see the African penguins in the exhibit. It was exciting to see them up close and be able to stand right next to them!!!!! What a great day!!!
I have loved penguins since elementary school, and become very interested in their lifestyle and habitat in the 7th grade. It has been one of my goals for a long time to visit penguins in their natural habitat, and eventually see all the different species of penguin in natural habitats. One day it will happen!
I saw South African penguins at Boulder Bay near Cape Town, South Africa. You wouldn’t think there’d be penguins in that type of climate — it’s half way between the equator and the Geographic South Pole, their “winter” temperatures are like my summer temperatures (I’m at 49°N latitude but on the Pacific Coast of North America). But the South African species thrives in the Cape Town region.
It’s definitely worth a go if you’re in the area and have time, but I’d only give it a medium-to-high priority. They built this wooden deck that sticks out on the beach. Tourists are only allowed on the wooden deck and not on the beach.
This makes total sense and I completely agree this what’s best for the penguins. But when we were there, it was really really crowded. Everyone and their handheld DVs/digital cameras were there hogging up the edges that had the best views. The penguins, of course, knew to stay far far away from the big stinky lumbering animals behind the fence. I really don’t blame them, I’d stay away too if I could.
I could see the few that were standing about 10 feet from one of the edges if I stood up on my tip-toes and peered over other peoples’ sunscreen basted shoulders… but that’s it.
I love penguins. Its in my blood, the addiction that is. I’m following my uncles footsteps who followed my grandma’s. We collect penguin things, and i think the cherry on the top would be seeing them for real in their natural habitat.
