I’ve reset my goal-setter to align all goals with the SMART principles. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely. It feels good to make goals and reach them using a specific and measurable system.

How can you measure things like self esteem and not feeling ugly?

With a background in organizational and people development, I’ve taught the SMART principles. Lately I’ve been a slacker and haven’t been using this concept. I’m back on the SMART course now.
1. Specific
2. Measurable
3. Achievable
4. Realistic
5. Time framed

Wyatt
is trying to come back
Specific:
Who(Me.)
What(I want to revise my goals.)
Where(43T.)
When(This week.)
Why(So that the goals are things that I can achieve.)
Measurable:
This goal will be complete when every goal has either been changed to reflect the SMART criteria or been given an entry explaining the SMART criteria.
Attainable:
This goal is easily attainable within a short period of time. It is important to me that all of my goals are attainable. Therefore, I have started on this one. The steps I will take are simple and prepared already.
Realistic:
Yes. I won’t have a problem doing this.
Timely:
I will complete this by 29 June 2008. I will also assign SMART criteria to goals I set in the future.

This was interesting, I managed to clarify a couple of things, and I’ve discovered that deadlines, and 43T, are helpful for me:)

Specific. Our goals need to be specific in order for us to achieve them.
“be a millionaire” – does that include real estate? own a 3 bedroom home in Rancho Penasquitos or Glen Ridge and you are almost there. Does a retirement account count? While “be a millionaire” may sound specific it really isn’t.
Even “lose weight” doesn’t work – after each visit to the toilet one technically loses weight. And since a cubic inch of muscle weighs more than a cubic inch of fat how does one take that into account? And size doesn’t matter either – several years ago there a flight attendant filed suit against one of the major US airlines over a size issue. He was a body builder who was larger than the company guidelines.
General goals are a great starting point, but do not challenge us to think and act critically. Being specific in our goals will make it easier for us to achieve them.
