in August of 1992. In honor of a friend of mine that was one of the first human marrow transplant patients of Dr. E Donnell Thomas at The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in the early ‘70s. She is a survivor due to his research and a real inspiration to all that are lucky to know her!

How I did it: I am from South Africa, so my experience will probably only be relevant to other South Africans. It was so easy! I called the Sunflower Fund, gave them some information about myself over the phone, they emailed me a form which I then took to my nearest branch of the South African National Blood Service where they took a sample of my blood - and that was it! Now my information is archived and if I'm matched to someone I'll be called to don… Read how I did it…
How I did it: It was something I'd read about and wanted to do. I'd actually bookmarked the site. So...working away and I took a break and spent some time organizing bookmarks. I read more and searched for a location near me. Turned out it was 4 miles from my house. It was super easy. Q-Tip type swab in the corners of your cheeks, answer a few questions. Some people remark about the pain of the extraction process. I say, man, I could save someone's life.… Read how I did it…
How I did it: I was lucky enough to go to a health fair and register in person. By registering today at the fair the $52 tissue-typing kit was paid for by the organization hosting the health fair. But for those of you that want to be proactive and register online, go to www.marrow.org. For a $52 fee and a few minutes to fill out some paper work, you too can be a registered bone marrow donor. The "test" entails rub… Read how I did it…

How I did it: Well the registration fee was a bit of a problem for broke little me, so I saved and saved and then today I found out that the fee right now is only $25! So I printed off the consent forms from online and went to the Puget Sound Blood Center this afternoon and turned in my forms and got my cheeks swabed to be type tested. From the time I walked out the door of my house until I walked back in was 45 minutes and the blood center … Read how I did it…

I get paid on Friday and I did some calculations today to figure out my budget for the month and I should be able to afford the last $21 that I need to pay my registration fee. So once I get my money on Friday then I will be paying me fee and registering! I’m so excited to actually get on the list even though I know it takes a few months before you are actually on the list but I’m excited to get it started!

I put aside another $10 today toward my fee. Now I’m up to $31. When I get paid next Friday I’ll take out the last twenty dollars I need and sign up!

Does anyone know how I can get on the register without having to pay the $52 dollars? I don’t have that kind of money right now but I really want to get on the registry. I missed out on the NASCAR thing because I didn’t hear about it in time. So does anyone know if there is another program like that where I can get on for free?
Thanks

What are the odds that you will be a match for someone and get to be an actual donor? I’m not a minority and I was just curious how likely it is that I will get to donate someday once I’m registered? Does anybody know?

I went today to marrow.org to sign up for FREE to be on the registry, and learned that my fibromyalgia, back issues, and daily use of pain meds mean I can’t be a donor.
But YOU might qualify. Go to marrow.org (http://www.marrow.org/HELP/Join_the_Donor_Registry/Join_Now_Sponsored/join_now_sponsored.html) find out if you qualify, and if you do, sign up for FREE until September 22.
