Night cache 1 month ago

I did my first nighttime caching – the initial starting point was a trailhead specified by the GPS coordinates on the tick sheet. Because I wasn’t sure how long the route would be, nor was I keen on carrying a flashlight in hand, I used the helmet-mounted bike light, its battery tucked into my rain jacket pocket. The route was marked with a white trail tack every few hundred feet. “Trail tacks” are little reflective thumbtacks that you’d completely miss during the daytime, but stand out moderately well with a flashlight aimed in the general direction. (I guess they’re primarily used by hunters?) Even in the rain, they worked well.

There were several turns onto other trails. The off-trail portion was marked by an additional orange trail tack. After ambling down and into the bush for another 20-ish feet, we spotted the pair of orange “eyes” marking the final, a camouflaged ammo box.

Like Chris, I will need to check myself into Geocacher’s Anonymous.

Had a great hike this morning!

Got three more this weekend. I didn’t end up having as much time as I thought I would to look. There were a couple more on my list for the weekend that I wanted to try and get to, but I forgot about the yearly craft fair on the square in my town, so there was no way I was going to get to them without being spotted.

I’ve just learned about geocaching from another person here on 43 things. It looks really interesting and we just bought a GPS. I think I will see if my husband is interested.

My first find!!! The location was right across the street from where I work and when I got off at 6am this morning, I had to stop and look. It took me a bit since there wasn’t much light at this time in the morning, but with a little determination…SUCCESS!!!

I can’t wait for the weekend to get here, I’ve already got my list ready for some serious searching!

0 for 2 today 3 months ago

I finally purchased my handheld GPS unit today and drove home all excited to get together a list of coordinates and find me some caches. I ended up not having as much time as I would have liked, but did manage to make it down to our local park to look for what I thought would be two quick finds. Alas I came up empty handed today. :( I couldn’t seem to find either one, and thought that maybe it was my GPS or something that I was doing wrong.
After checking geocaching.com to log my lack of success, I found that I’m not the only one that couldn’t find these two. One was close enough to the creek in the park that it might have been carried off during the floods earlier this year. The other was hidden in a pringles can…which was either eaten by an animal or found by some kids that have a “fort” built up in the area.

I shall not be deterred though. I’m going to go out to our local nature park this weekend and see what I can find out there!

So I gave up on this goal and then happened to try it and loved it. I’ve found 3 caches so far and moved one travel bug from Santa Cruz to Big Sur. I’m very excited to try to find more of the caches in my area.

Really neat multi cache this afternoon. 3 months ago

I did a multi part/ puzzle one this afternoona and it was very good. Was partly on the hollowed grounds of Ft. Logan Cemetary. Really neat!
You can take this link to it and scroll down to read about my adventure and misadventure in completing it.

I have found 5 3 months ago

Got my gps and I am hooked! This is so much fun! I found 5 relatively easy ones. I looked for one that I just knew I had to be close and after no find I emailed the owner adn he spilled the beans. (Not that I wanted him to but I did ask for a hint). I will go back and actually find it… I know where it is. It is a very cool one that is looking you right in the face the whole time. Maybe I will take a picture and post it here. This one was very cool! Like I said I am hooked! One more hobby to try and make time for! :)
