i only managed to be at the piano about every third day this week instead of every other day. the time i spent there was wonderful, though it was starting to overload my arm muscles. i need to keep spreading it out to a little each day instead of a lot two or three times a week.
i only got in my piano time about every other day this week. need to keep trimming the fat from my todo list and making music a higher priority.
i’ve been pretty good about putting in an hour each day this week. i’ve started a routine of a 1/2 hour at the keyboard, a 1/2 hour of listening to music while reading the score (this and this make a great combination), a 1/2 hour of reading about music (music history, theory, etc.), and a 1/2 hour back at the piano. it’s fun! i need to keep reducing other unnecessary commitments to make time for it.
Have been dawdling on piano for a year now. Know rudimentary chords, but want to get serious practice in.
Finally after a very long time i joined piano class. I bought a new piano also. Started practising. This is my week 1.
im struggling. I get frustrated easily. I go once a week and only for a half hour. i love the instrument but im afraid i’ll give it up. i am trying though.Just i should be trying more. Fuck.
So I noticed that I have been learning for a little over a year now, so I thought I would make a note on my progress. I’m very close to finishing Alfred’s Book 1 (currently ironing out “The Entertainer”), I have the first 20 exercises of 60 exercises (for “mastery” ha ha) memorized and I can play them well, plus I have learned three Bach minuets. My sight reading is improving though I don’t work on it specifically very often.
Over the next year I will strive to continue to practice regularly (I’ve been doing so almost every day), improve my sight reading, work through Alfred’s Book 2, get through 20 more exercises, and learn all of the Bach pieces in my Bach for Beginners Book 1 (and commit to memory those pieces I enjoy).
I would also like to spend some time on classical and jazz theory (including ear training), begin to improvise a little, and perhaps write some simple parts for my own music.
I’ve been playing piano since I was in 9 (13 years ago), and though I haven’t taken lessons consistently since high school, I still really enjoy it. It was hard learning to read music, but I’ve found that it’s really hard to forget how to do. I think that listening to music creates one type of sensation, and being on the other end—CREATING music, even if not necessarily composing it, opens up a whole new type of emotion.
There are days when I’m in a mood that I can’t explain with words, but I’ve never had trouble finding a piano piece that said it exactly right.
I’m also learning guitar now, which is pretty exciting.

WillDante asks,
“Hi I'm Will (16). I recently bought myself a keyboard, and bought a book to start learning. It's been about 6 months, and I still have difficulty reading sheet music well. I don't have the time/money for lessons, so do you have any suggestions?”
