I’ve now got a few years of PHP and I think I’m pretty good at development. But I’m hobbled by the fact that, although I understand some CSS and have a good grasp on the basic concepts, it’s hard for me to get stuff done with it quickly.
I had a job interview this week that went fine until they gave me their “test”, which involved cutting up a Photoshop file into CSS-based markup. I’ve worked on several projects where cutting up the image is the designer’s responsibility, but perhaps I should take upon myself to learn more of this.

Not that hard

easy to learn : write a webpage using CSS, open it in your browser and learn as you change your CSS and refresh the browser.
After a while, you’ll be forced to think about the design of your site, which is a good side effect.

I know the basics and the principles of CSS, but I need to learn more. It’s a fun puzzle!

I steal CSS code. I hack it. My modified code doesn’t work :-(
I’ve even got a book with a chapter about CSS in it. I really should just read it. I should be able to grasp the fundamentals – I am a C++ programmer.

There is always more to learn, but this is getting marked as done. I remember when I first added this goal to my list I had no clue. Now I can code beautiful tableless layouts keeping style separate from structure.

I’m slowly understanding CSS, but I know it will take so much more time to master it.
