I’ve been in love with the japanese language since about age 6, before i ever knew anything about my partial japanese heritage. My japanese grandfather died when i was a baby, and we never had any contact with his side of the family, as my grandmother had long since separated from him. Perhaps the DNA actually carries a spirit component we don’t realise, or it may be only coincidence… either way, i have always felt more comfortable with japanese culture than american, and nihongo is to me the most beautiful language in the world.

When hearing of people who study japanese in high school, i am pea green with envy, because we are not so fortunate in my area. In fact, no college in my entire state offers it, and i am unable to relocate at this time. For now, i am limited to self-study. I’ve found 2 language-exchange clubs in a neighbouring state, but transportation is a problem for me so not sure how often i’ll be able to attend meetings. Meanwhile i’ll be working with textbooks and flashcards, and immersing myself in all the japanese films i can get my hands on. Wish me luck, fellow students.

I started taking Japanese in college in hopes of applying for the JET program. Unfortunately that didn’t work out, because my husband got accepted to grad school, and our plans changed. But I’d love to go to Japan someday, and I’d also love to finish learning Japanese. I’m not particularly good with languages, but I did well with Japanese and found the structure really interesting.

Made my way through the first five Pimsleur lessons. Easy stuff, as I already know the basics. More importantly, I’m going to Japan for three months, starting in Jan ‘09. Trying to finish the Pimsleur course (90 lessons) by then, and then study hard and practice a lot while I’m there.

    Woot!

This is part of another goal of going to Japan. I want to be able to read and understand the language when I get there.

I love anime, and Japanese culture. I already speak some Japanese but I want to become completely fluent. _

I bought this great cd from ebay which i’ve been learning japanese from. I know all the basics, but need more free time since i’m probably at the peak of my teenage life. (secondary school exams and trying to get into a college course) Why couldn’t I have decided to do this two years ago when I had absolutely nothing to do?

I’ve been taking the courses for four semesters, but I’ve got a long way to go. Especially in terms of speaking and understanding. I was kind of relying on study abroad to get better, but since I transferred colleges I don’t get to go.

I’m thinking about trying to watch some anime and Studio Ghibli works without subs, and maybe trying my hand at translating something basic to keep up my grammar.
