taking the class in September 09

I’ve always been fascinated with the medical field of work.
I want a career as an author but I also want to be apart of this as well.
I’m hoping being a paramedic will help with my humanitarian goal on some level.

Second Semester 3 months ago

First semester was mostly review of what was covered in EMT school, plus psychiatric emergencies and a few other things. Second semester is like a huge smack in the face – pharmacology, trauma, respiratory, OB, pediatrics…it’s tough. Things are starting to fall into place as far as understanding what’s really going on with the patient. The scary thing is realizing just how much more there is to learn. Every time I understand something new, I realize that there are so many other things that I don’t understand. Kinda puts a whole new perspective on things.

With luck, I’m going to school in August to become an EMT, the first of many steps to becoming a paramedic.

It was a long road. 7 months ago

I started out as a first responder in 1999. In 2000 I went to EMT School and in 2006 graduated Paramedic school. The pay suck’s considering that I am the closest thing some folks get to a doctor when they are in bad shape, but all in all, it has been good to me. This will be a good jumping off point for P.A. School now.

Christina is struggling to keep up

Start this week 7 months ago

Classes start on Wednesday. This is what I’ve been waiting for for months! I’m excited! I’ve been an EMT-I for almost a year now (1 year in June) and I don’t usually get to tech on the “good calls.” Yesterday I had a good call at work. Unresponsive guy in a car, extremely diaphoretic. Turned out to have a blood glucose of 31. Horrible venous access. Finally found a vein in his thumb. We even tried for his EJ and that didn’t work. So I stuck him in the thumb with a 22 gauge needle. Got a flash and flushed it with 10 ccs of saline to make sure it was patent. It was so we hooked up a line of saline and D50 and started pushing it in slowly. The vein held and the guy started waking up once the D50 was in. His glucose was up to 150 by the time we were at the hospital. I’ve started plenty of IVs, but never one in the thumb. It’s calls like that that make me want to keep coming back to work. Where you can fix that problem and everyone is ok. It’s moments like finding that one little vein that make me want to continue doing my job.

I been Volunteering here in FL as a Non Certified. Now I want to get certified and do this full time…

Well, I got a scholarship to the school of my choice so, at the moment, I’m actively pursuing the dream! I’m sure I’ll pass. Class isn’t a breeze but it’s fun and challenging.
