Clandestine Distillery - Switzerland 4 weeks ago

It was fun and we got to see how the absinthe is made in this small distillery. There’s a LOT of different herbs that go into it – although each distillery has their own recipe. It was fun to watch and try…but I don’t like licorice and, since the one mandatory ingredient is wormwood Artemisia absinthium, that’s what it tastes like. It is very potent, even when watered down with the 5:1 ratio we were recommended. Just the taste tests gave me pretty good buzz. It is legal in the U.S. now (not sure where it’s still illegal) and this distillery is working through a distributor to make it available in the U.S. this year. We brought a bottle back of the really good (green) style back with us and I have a sip now and again. I loved this distillery and the tour we took. Anyone going to Switzerland should check it out. It was small and intimate and we felt like we were the only people who had come through there in days. I’ll upload a picture of the distillery’s absinthe label, so you can look for it if you’re interested in purchasing some. Your local wine store should be able to order it from the distributor.

We did the traditional method which is dissolving a sugar cube with ice water over a glass of absinth. We didn’t have traditional absinth spoons or glasses, obviously, but I gather the effect is the same.

I’m hoping it’s more fun than it appears in L’Absinthe by Degas.

Absinthe is illegal in the US, but I found some in Tokyo. It was a bit harsh and numbing. I don’t think it had the qualities of the original absinthe, that green liquid we see in the painting, The Absinthe Drinker. Mine was a clear color, like vodka. I believe the original was opiated, and I’m sure that would be illegal everywhere, but I’m willing to try a shot if you can find a bottle.
