Worth doing!

It’s an ok language, probably better than most of the ones out there. However it’s severely crippled by the lack of general higher-order functions; blocks are nice syntax-wise but semantically arbitrary. Python, while lacking most of Ruby’s ergonomic syntax, surpasses it in that area. If you like Ruby, I’d suggest trying Lisp.

I need to do it so my web-dev knowledge to get wider and my site gets wider acceptance around the world (which probably will make me cash or if not will make me popular across the tubes)

I’ve finished everything I considered for calling Ruby “learned”, recognizing nothing like this is ever really done. Still, at one point in a late chapter of the pickaxe book (chap 23, I think) there is some sample code with the comment “If you understand this, you’re well on your way to Ruby mastery”, and I understood it, so I guess I can call “learned” done.

Ruby is fun  — 4 weeks ago

Worth doing!

I enjoyed learning Ruby.
I was looking for a good interpreted language supporting the Object Oriented paradigm, so I choosed Ruby. The language is truly programmer friendly. Now I often miss Ruby’s power when I program using other languages on the job.

Learning Ruby made me think more clearly about my programming style and now I’m better at programming even in my other programming languages.

Definitely it’s worth doing.

Worth doing!

I still consider myself intermediate, but I know this well enough now to use it to make my living, so I’m marking it as done :-)

Be ruby, be different  — 1 month ago

Worth doing!

Learn a new language not only increase your versatility but also improve on your implementation skill as you take back some of the new language’s features to your old language. Ruby is top notch and not knowing it is a shame.
