How to develop a daily morning routine
How I did it: I'm scatterbrained, so I have to make lists for pretty much everything. I sat down, opened up notepad on my computer, and thought about what I should do in the morning to feel my best that day.
For example, I know the first thing I should do when I wake up is a few morning stretches (not the tired, yawny stretches you do in bed, but the ones you do standing up). So I put that first. And I know I usually forget to take my vitamin, so I added "take vitamin" along with eating breakfast.
I also flipped through some magazines and looked up what other people did in their routines for ideas. I really liked the "put clothes in dryer so they're warm" idea. I feel all indulgent wearing clothes fresh out of the dryer.
And to help myself stick to it, I tried to keep it short and sweet. Realistically, I could never stick to a routine that had more than 10 steps. The health freak in me would love to, but I'm only human. I don't think you should ever waste time on a looong morning routine, when the point of a morning routine is so you can get ready for other things. (At least to me.)

My routine used to consist of my door being pulled off its hinges, me plodding over to close it, curling up in bed for twenty extra minutes, cursing, packing my bag, dressing and making it all seem like I’d been up since 6:30… (lies). Now I use an alarm clock and there is no need for my door to be opened. I get up dress and pack my bag. No ‘ME’ time.
I’d like to create a very lazy morning routine. I hate being rushed. 6:30 is a fine wake-up time. Now I just have to work out what I’d like to do in the mornings. 6:30am every morning except Saturdays and Sundays because I do quite like a sleep in.

brush teeth
drink half liter of water as i
(do morning pages)
stretch
sit ups
push ups
shower
dress
breakfast
most of the list is doable. i’ve been mostly doing everything lately except the morning pages, but with some push and dedication, they will find a solid place in the routine somewhere.
i should wake up earlier.

My ideal morning routine? I am still trying to figure it out. I do not know if it is to:
1. Get up early
2. Pray
3. Meditate
4. Do yoga
5. Shower
6. Write
Or rather:
1. Get up early
2. Write
3. Pray
4. Meditate
5. Do yoga
6. Shower
Anyhoo-I was able to get up today, pray and meditate before having breakfast. It’s a start-but I want to accomplish far more. Ideally, I would like to wake up at around 5 am or so to get in as much “quiet time” as I can.
The song “Brand New Day” by Tim Myers has cutesy lyrics that describe how I wish I could feel when I wake up every morning but I feel more like how comedian Mike Birbiglia describes when he wakes up – he says he feels like a lame cow on the side of the road. I would like to have some kind of routine to look forward to that gets me up and out of bed and refreshed and excited for the day. I’m always late for everything and I think this would help with that little problem too.

Routines are beneficial, if for no other reason than it develops muscle memory. And muscle memory aids in repetition, which ultimately means we do things whether we want to or not. All good for writing.
My new nifty morning routine:
*Stretches
*Drink cup of tea, have breakfast, and take multivitamin
*Plan outfit, and put clothes I’m going to wear that day in the dryer (makes em toasty and fresh)
*Brush teeth, wash face
*Moisturize, Sunscreen
*Makeup and hair
*Put on toasty, fresh clothes
*Spritz of perfume and out the door!
Of course there are those days where I’m just going, “Bleh, no”. But overall it’s working out well for me. :D
