How I did it: It's actually surprisingly easy.  If you have Windows (I know for sure this works on XP and Vista), go to Windows Movie Maker, which might be under either "Accessories" or "Entertainment."  The interface, despite being proprietary software, is relatively user-friendly and intuitive.  Basically you start plopping in elements - sound, images, titles, etc. - and when you're done you save it.  Now, here's the one non-intuitive thing...

You have to choose the option on the left to "save to my computer" in order for it to save in a file format that YouTube can deal with.  Just save it in a folder where you'll be able to find it again, then go to YouTube and upload it.  I tend to be pretty grouchy about technology's user-aggressiveness, so if I think it's fairly straightforward and worthwhile, let alone enjoyable, you are in for a very doable ride.
