What counts as a novel? 1 month ago

The definition is thus:

1. a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length and complexity, portraying characters and usually presenting a sequential organization of action and scenes.

But that doesn’t really tell me anything. Is there a rough guideline on amount of pages, as it says a novel is ‘of considerable length’, is that something like 400 pages +?

it was called volevo i pantaloni and it was an italian novel, it was an easy read yet it wasn’t childish. It dealt with serious issues and it was for somewhat mature audiences. It was a great novel!!

I only read in Spanish ... 1 year ago

Since about 2000, nearly ever book I have read (and I’m a regular reader) has been in Spanish.

I started out slowly with “The Little Prince” and the entire Harry Potter series. Then I built up to Paulo Coelho and John Steinbeck.

I’m most proud of having read “East of Eden”, John Steinbeck’s flagship novel, in Spanish. It took me a couple of years reading off and on, but i finally finished it while in the Peace Corps in Perú.

The HARDEST book I have ever read in Spanish was “The Prophet” by Kalhil Gibran. It is written nearly entirely second person plural imperative. Yuck!

..learning Portuguese.. 1 year ago

I’ve just started learning Portuguese, and have somewhat abandoned Spanish in favor of it. This is mostly due to a change in policy at the school that makes it difficult for me to take Spanish courses.. so I’m just going to learn Portuguese on my own. Next year, maybe I’ll try a children’s book..
