50.  — 8 hours ago

Every year, I make a New Year’s resolution to read more. I like being specific with goals, so I tell myself that in the next year, I’ll read 50 books. That’s not bad, right? It’s a book a week or so.

Well, I finished that goal by May. After two months of not actively reading, I re-started that goal. If I finish (which I expect to: it’s late August and I’ve read 28 of my 50, am in the middle of 4 books right now, and have a list of to-reads that’s a mile long) that’ll make 100 books in 2008. Pretty impressive, I think.

I’ve always thought reading was important. It expands your vocabulary and exposes you to different scenarios that you wouldn’t have access to otherwise.

beginings  — 14 hours ago

well nothing day one but managed an hour on day 2. started reading ‘ugly’ by constance briscoe. it was given to me as a present and i’m not sure what i think of it yet. i reckon that i can read a book a week easily if i put some effort into making the time for it so my goal is to read one bok a week til christmas and if i’m on track i will extend it. the only criteria i’m applying is that it has to be an entire book and for pleasure, no text books lol.

Three new books.  — 15 hours ago

I recently purchased three new books from Barnes and Nobles, “The Republic” by Plato, “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu, and “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” by Friedrich Nietzsche. I’m hoping to read at least 30 mins a day, I love to read, but fall out of habit when life intrudes.

Two more books  — 1 day ago

were read during my vacation.

  • So Say We All: An Unauthorized Collection of Thoughts and Opinions on Battlestar Galactica
I got this for an “easy read” during my vacation, since it’s a collection of essays and I was able to read just one or two at a time. It was a very interesting mix, fun stuff, but also several thought provoking or informative pieces.
  • Ich bin dann mal weg. Meine Reise auf dem Jakobsweg
And I got this because I had heard good things about it and also due to my having been in Spain, I thought I might enjoy this story about walking the Way of St. James, the pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
The unusual things about this particular book is probably that the writer is a well known comedian, but he certainly didn’t make fun of his experience. It was full of little stories, sometimes amusing, sometimes insightful and thought provoking and always very human. I’m glad I read it.
Beginning.  — 2 days ago

I started to read the book “EAT,PRAY,LOVE” by Elizabeth Gilbert.
Now, I’m reading on page 30. It’s funny and making me start to think about woman’s inner mind.
then, I have one question about this book. Is it the real story of authors’s own life?

ButtercupSam has to clean the bathroom. YUCK!

Books are our friends!  — 2 days ago

Worth doing!

On August 8th, I challenged myself to read more. Hopefully 50 books within a year. Life and other hobbies always seem to get in my way of enjoyment so I decided to take time for little ole’ me. So far I, I have read:

1. Bastard out of Carolina
2. When Crickets Cry
3. Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen
4. The Good Earth

This week...  — 2 days ago

I read ‘The Assassasin’s Song’ by M.G. Vassanji. It was a very interesting book. I learned a lot about Gujurat, snippets of deep wisdom from the ancient Hindu & Islamic texts, and myself. I saw a lot of myself in the main character, Karsan. I think his plight will resonate with many NRIs. It is a very good read. Slow at the beginning, but later on it gets interesting. I recommend reading it.

...Read books very slowly but I love getting involved in a story or feeling the emotion that good writer can give to you. Johnny Got His Gun was amazing and before then I had only read fantasy books. Now I’m interested in reading something really strange yet brilliant.
