is stuck in the middle of ambitious and too damn lazy.
A lot of people don’t get that being able to understand and being able to speak it are two completely different things. I can understand when my parents talk to me, but when I try to talk back, it gets all locked up in my brain and refuses to come out without me stuttering… and having dead air and long bouts of “uuuuueeehh…..”. But I’m trying to speak to them constantly and I’m getting a little more fluent… which means I currently sound like a three year old.

I would love to learn Tagalog for my wife. She is Filipino and we plan to visit the Philippines very soon to visit her mother. I needed to learn the basics of the language fast, so I wrote my own flash card program using VBScript. Here is a free copy of it if anyone is interested.
TAGALOG VBS FLASH CARDS
It brings up a Tagalog word every 6 minutes or so and you have to try and guess the meaning. This way you can surf the net, listen to music, chat, and learn Tagalog all at the same time. I found it helpful to learn some of the basics. Since I built it today, I have not really made too much progress with it other than learning the numbers.

I’m a Filipina American and I do not know the language of Tagalog. I think it’d be a great thing to learn this beautiful language and keep passing it on, even if it isn’t used often. It may disappear from many Filipino families but not this one!

Like a lot of Filipino-Americans growing up here, my parents also decided not to teach me Tagalog when I was young. I hear my parents and relatives talk Tagalog and also took Tagalog for three years in high school, yet I still don’t understand as much as I want.
So far, I’ve been studying online, trying out the Rosetta Stone program and trying to get my mom to talk to me in Tagalog. Currently, I can get by watching “Wowowee” on TFC, but I’d really like to be able to understand the dramas without the aid of subtitles – and also get in on all the “tsismis” at the family parties, lol.

My Ma’s side are Filipino, and there’s a real good chance that hopefully she may move back home permanently in 2 years after living in the UK for over 30, so I really need to get fluent in Tagalog! At present my Ma almost exclusively speaks to me in the language, but its really not enough to hear it spoken all the time: I need to practise SPEAKING it more.
It doesn’t help when Philippine languages as a group are (linguistically) some of the most difficult Austronesian languages out there, and I still really can’t tell the difference between when you use “nakakapag” something and “pagka” something, but I will step the pace up now and get it in the bag! Kasi, mas importante ito (na pag-aaral ang wikang pamilya ko) kaysa sa ibang na kailangang kong gagawin. (was that even correct? lol) Good luck to all!

I need to do this, because you can talk about someone secretly in Spanish and get caught, but it’s MUCH easier to do it in Tagalog.
